More than 500 people joined the fight to save aged care facilities owned by Monash Council. They own the sites, and are proceeding with plans to seek expressions of interest for Monash Gardens in Mulgrave and Elizabeth Gardens in Burwood.

Last Tuesday, with placards and chants, protesters gathered outside the council's Glen Waverley offices then joined the meeting. The ability of "Monash's very young councillors" to understand an issue affecting the elderly was questioned. Mayor Micaela Drieberg had to respond to a record number of public questions, each a variation on the one issue.

The decision to sell was "not about dollars and cents", said Cr Paul Klisaris, but one that would deliver quality of care to the city's elderly.
