The Easts Group, which is the traditional home of the Sydney Roosters NRL Club, will re-develop the Waverley Bowling Club into a retirement village and childcare centre in a bid to save the struggling club from shutting down.
The bowls club will then be moved to the nearby North Bondi golf course, with the North Bondi site to be transformed into a new sports centre complete with two bowling greens.
While a vote on the decision is not set to go ahead until the end of the month, the Club’s board says that the development is essential to its survival.
“We’re putting the sporting bodies together and revitalising the building and, when you couple that with the stunning views down there and more activity, you should be able to make a viable operation down there,” Easts Group chief executive Scott Bennetts told The Daily Telegraph.
“This considerable investment into the Waverley community would guarantee the survival of both the bowling and golfing members of each club, while also developing crucial new facilities at the Birrell St and North Bondi sites.”
Both clubs would stay open until the facilities opened in late 2019 to ensure members can still use them undisrupted.
