While many believe that moving to a retirement village means moving to a place close to home, that’s really not the case.
The most recent McCrindle Baynes retirement village census 2013, completed by 5200 residents of retirement villages across Australia, has shown that the majority of people looking for retirement living will travel to suit their needs.
Research has shown that a staggering 44% of people that have recently moved into a retirement village moved more than 20km from where they lived including 31% that have moved more than 50km.
Why? Many factored in money, selling their house and buying into something less expensive to for extra cash to live or to travel.
Some of the retirees said their main factor was to find a retirement village that was closer to family & friends, but many preferred to find somewhere closer to their medical facility.
Of the top 10 factors for choosing a retirement village, 7 out of 10 decisions were made with physical health in mind, somewhere with 24 hour medical access, a hydrotherapy pool, gym or walking path.
