More than 100 people were evacuated from a Woonona retirement village when fire broke out.

The blaze swept through the building’s air conditioning unit. Police, fire and ambulance paramedic crews attended and assisted staff in evacuating 102 residents from the dementia wing.

No one was injured.

The fire was extinguished, however the building suffered extensive water damage.

Fire and Rescue NSW inspector Brendan Cox said it was likely that some residents would be able to return to their accommodation straight away because of the damage.

Chief Executive Nieves Murray of operator IRT said the quick actions of staff had ensured nobody was in danger or hurt throughout the experience, with sprinklers stopping the fire from spreading to other areas of the care centre.
