Seniors groups and retirement village operators in Queensland are calling on the state government to simplify retirement village contracts that new residents are asked to read and sign.
The National Seniors Organisation (NSO) Queensland policy chairwoman Ms Somerwil says that the product information document given to new residents is a mess and needs to be rewritten in plain English.
"So that when people read through it they don't get lost in the mire, and really understand what it is they were reading," she said.
This call for clarity could quickly spread around the country.
Andrew Giles, chief executive officer of the Retirement Village Association agrees village contracts need to be improved.
"If people get a full description of what they're going to get within their living environment, and of course when they exit, that can be dealt with through education rather than regulation," he said.
Solicitors who specialize in deciphering retirement village contracts are available for around $1,000 to $1,500. You can phone the Association of Residents of Queensland Retirement Villages for a list of recommended solicitors on 07 5493 2660.
