Residents at the Murray Vale retirement village in Albury are demanding a pedestrian crossing before someone is killed.

Crossing busy Wagga Road to reach the Lavington Shopping centre is a dangerous affair for the village’s senior residents.

88 year old Doris Vanderheld said a pedestrian crossing was long overdue.

“If you are a bit slow on your feet like I am, you can’t get across safely,” she said.

“I was young and fit when I moved in, but I am not now. People who have got sight and balance problems also need a safe haven half-way across the road. We want to enjoy our twilight years and not be skittled.”

Marianne Warren, regional manager of UPA which operates Murray Vale, said a crossing was badly needed.

“We understand the limitations of council in that the road is owned by the RTA and it is unlikely we would see a full pedestrian crossing,” she said.

“But we would perhaps like to see an island where our residents could walk to the centre and be protected.”

Council has said improvements to Wagga Road were under consideration.
