Halcyon Greens very own cooking expert, project director Scott Ng, has sparked a culinary uprising with the men at Halcyon Greens by putting cooking lessons on the community’s menu.
The ‘Spice Boys’ cookery class came about following comments by some of the women at Halcyon Greens about the lopsided nature of cooking duties at home so Mr Ng decided to arm the blokes with kitchen skills to surprise their better halves.
“I saw it as a good opportunity for the guys to learn something new in a relaxed atmosphere, so I suggested to them that we prove we can all get our hands dirty in the kitchen, and to do it as a surprise for the wives. It was a first-time experience for most of them, and we had a lot of fun with it” he said.
The first ‘Spice Boys’ event had 18 men show up for a three-hour cooking lesson, where Mr Ng stepped the men through three classic Asian dishes – San Choi Bow, spring rolls and Vietnamese rice paper rolls, before letting them try it for themselves.
After a lot of laughter and banter, the meals were served up as lunches for the wives.
And the verdict?
According to Mr Ng a lot of the ladies were surprised and said the boys could start cooking at home while others suggested this was proof they needed to keep the men away from the kitchen.
The outstanding success of the first ‘Spice Boys’ session has seen it become a regular on the community’s calendar with Mr Ng planning a lesson in Italian cookery as well as culinary sessions for the ladies.
Mr Ng is also planning a community cook off the determine Halcyon Greens best ‘chef’.
