A collaboration of Australian researchers is looking for volunteers to participate in a national trial of two new types of treatment for aphasia – a condition which occurs in about a third of stroke survivors, affecting their ability to communicate.

Aphasia occurs when there is damage to the part of the brain that is responsible for language and communication so it can affect a person’s ability to talk, listen (understand what others say), read, write, use numbers and gestures.

The researchers are recruiting volunteers from most states to participate in an intensive two-week treatment program and they are optimistic that the new treatments will lead to improved outcomes for those people affected.
