"We looked at Tall Trees for about 12 months. The staff were excellent, there was never any pushing - they worked with us and we worked with them. They gave us a 90-day contract so we could sell our home, and we sold in the expected period of time. This is not a retirement village - it's a resort!"
Tall Trees has become quite famous thanks to the promotional support of Lady Flo Bjelke Peterson. It's an innovative village community that offers independent living plus continuing care in your own home, without the need for an ACAT assessment.
Glen: "We had been looking to move from the family home for about eight years."
Connie: "Our health was deteriorating when we heard Lady Flo on the radio. We have four children and they are all very busy - we wanted to make the move while we still could and not be a burden to them."
Glen: "I was a shop-assistant in the engineering tools area for 25 years; I'm a fitter and turner by trade. I came from Bundaberg - I am a 'Bundi-ite.' I retired with the pension in 1984 at midnight - I was on the invalid pension and then transferred to the old age pension."
Connie: "I was one of a family of 10 and grew up looking after my sisters. I had no time to develop a career - I worked in sweets."
Glen: "We looked at Tall Trees for about 12 months. The staff were excellent, there was never any pushing - they worked with us and we worked with them. They gave us a 90-day contract so we could sell our home, and we sold in the expected period of time."
Connie: "The moment we walked in the front gate, we felt at home. We like the whole package deal concept; we have the choice. You can have all your meals in the dining room or delivered to your room. The food is beautiful - fresh two-course meals every day, with a barbecue every Saturday and a roast on Sunday. But we have our kitchenette so we can still make up our own meals."
"The village provides cleaning and care if your are not feeling well, or you can use Blue Care. And there is a doctor that visits every Wednesday, plus two doctors at the shopping centre next door. We are chock-a-block with doctors here!"
"Having the shopping centre next door and a bus stop right outside is fabulous - we can bring the trolley from the shopping centre right into the kitchen. At our old home, the shops were about 1.1 kilometres away which wasn't far but was still a car trip."
Glen: "It's about the same cost to live here as it was to live in our old home - I got a pencil and worked that out. But this is like a resort. We have a pool, its modern and everything works. And there are people like us that we can talk to and socialise with, but we're not in each other's pockets."
Connie: "The villa is lovely and level - even the carpet is on the same level. It's ready for a wheelchair, there is nothing to spend. These are all the things we thought about."
"We've been married for 54 years. We are back to where we started off - then we only had one bedroom. This is our home, we just love this place."
