Remote aged care facilities are struggling financially to keep their doors open. They are not building new aged care beds and are being forced to send local ‘customers’ long distances to find a bed.
Aveo has joined with the members of Newcastle’s Shortland Golf Club to build 300 golf course villas and 127 aged care beds. At the same time Aveo is going to build a new club house and upgrade the actual golf course. The development is adjacent to The University of Newcastle, offering an additional attraction to new residents.
Stuart Hutcheon (pictured) and Grant Corderoy, partners at StewartBrown Accountants, have raised the alarm on the growth in aged care overheads. They have just surveyed 73 operators and found that corporate administration costs as a percentage of revenue is rising at the same rate as revenue.

A smartphone App developed by Curtin University over the past 3 ½ years can identify patients with dementia suffering pain, utilising facial recognition technology. The app takes a 10 second video of the patient’s face and analyses it for the presence of pain.
